SUBJECT: [Retooling of assembly line]
Sales of our once popular [Appalachian Trail Bike] have declined precipitously during the past twelve months, while sales of our competitor’s bikes have soared. Due to flagging market demand, we will discontinue selling our line as soon as current inventories are depleted.
We will soon replace our [Appalachian Trail Bike] with an entirely new design, the [Bomber Bay Bike], which adds features our competitors do not offer—such as an [expandable cargo rack and optional compass and odometer]. In order to retool for the [new bike, we will shut down this plant for three weeks beginning June 7].
All assembly line employees will be laid off, however, [COMPANY] will continue to cover retirement plan contributions, health, and disability insurance during the two-week period.
When you return to work on [June 30], you will return to your current work teams and begin work on the new product line. The first [Bomber Bay Bikes] off the line will be yours to keep, in appreciation for your patience during the shut down. Each laid-off employee will receive one of these bikes.
